After the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986, there was a need to train doctors from radiation medicine. The staff of the department developed the program and began to conduct lunar cycles on this problem, with an annual training of 80-100 doctors.
In 1989, the radioimmunological laboratory was organized at the department, although these methods were used in the clinic and doctors studied them since 1975. More than 50 radioimmunological techniques were developed and implemented in the clinical practice with the definition of hormones, tumor markers, the state of metabolic processes, and others.
Postgraduate study in radiology was opened in 1951. First postgraduate student in radiology – SM Oder, who later became a leading radiotherapy specialist. In the post-graduate school in different years, most of the teachers of the department studied. Since 1992, the Department has entered the internship.
Graduates and postgraduate students successfully defend their dissertation. Professor O.O. Gorodetsky trained 40 doctors and candidates of sciences, professor T.P. Sivachenko – 7 doctors and 37 candidates of sciences, professor MF Lipkan – 1 Doctor and 4 PhDs, Professor D.S. Mechev – 5 doctors and 15 candidates of sciences.
Annually, the department’s staff publish on average 45-50 scientific papers. Such monographs, manuals and textbooks (total 61) as “Radioisotope diagnostics”, “Diagnostic and therapeutic application of radioactive isotopes”, “Radioisotope diagnostics in oncology”, “Therapeutic application of open radionuclides”, “Manual on nuclear medicine”, “Radiation methods in Diagnosis and evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment of prostate cancer “,” Hormones and tumor markers: clinical and methodical aspects “,” Radiation diagnosis “(2 volumes),” Radiology “,” Radiation therapy of brain tumors “, etc. became desktop books not only for radiology physicians of Ukraine but also CIS countries.
For the development and introduction into clinical practice of the domestic radio-diagnostic equipment of three employees of the department – T.P. Syvachenko, VP Ishchenko, V.K. Kalina in 1972 was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology. In 1979, Professor T.P. Sivachenko was awarded the honorary title of the Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine. Associate professor V.K. Kalin has been awarded the honorary title of the Honored inventor and rationalist of the USSR. Professor D.S. Mechev has gold and silver medals of the USSR (1979, 1981), in 2003 awarded the Honorary title of the Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, in 2008 at the fourth international salon of inventions and new technologies “New Time” was awarded a gold medal for a set of discoveries and inventions concerning the study of the pathogenesis of local radiation reactions, in 2011, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine awarded the medal “20 years of the NKRZU”. Professor O.I. Avramenko is the Honored Doctor of Ukraine, the cavalier of many state awards, including for participating in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
Since 1979, interregional courses “Application of Nuclear Techniques in Medicine” to foreign specialists on the line of the WHO-IAEA were conducted within 10 years on the basis of the Department together with the Department of Medical Radiology of the Central Institute for the Improvement of Physicians (Moscow). For this period, 320 doctors from 32 countries of the world have been trained.
